What we offer

Before beginning work we will discuss with you the aims of your family history research.

Following this consultation we will suggest one of the following approaches:

An introduction to your family history
A background research report that builds up a picture of your family history back to the mid-1800s. You will receive a family tree detailing your ancestry for one or both surname lines (for example, your father’s lineage). The report will give dates and place of births, marriages and deaths, and richer information such as where your relatives were born and lived, and their employment.

Your report will also include recommendations for follow-up research to broaden your family history knowledge. You may be keen to undertake some of this work yourself, alternatively we can continue to explore your ancestors with you. Depending on where in the country (or even further afield!) your family history leads, at this stage we may suggest you work with locally based researchers for some lines of your family tree.

Cost: £125.00 for each family line plus expenses (required birth, marriage or death certificates and travel)

While census records are a very useful research source, having access to some certificates for births, marriages and deaths will be essential for confirming your ancestors’ history. For England and Wales these certificates are provided by the General Register Office for a fee of £9.25 each. We will agree with you the maximum number of certificates you wish us to order during the research, and you will receive all the certificates we source on your behalf. Any travel expenditure will also be agreed with you in advance.

If you wish your family tree can be produced as a gift in a framed print for a small additional charge.

Tackling specific queries
Perhaps you have a particular family member that you would like to learn more about? After discussing the background to your question we will suggest a research plan and likely timescale for you to consider. It is difficult to predict how long a particular question could take to investigate, thus we recommend starting with a short first stage (2-3 hours). Often this will unearth the information you are looking for. If not we will recommend next steps for your research.
